Tips to help with hair loss

I am writing this post because my friend asked me to post some tips about hair loss, and how to help with this problem on the Facebook page. But this is a topic that I could not just post a status on Facebook about, because there is so much to say about this topic.

First thing that we need to know is that it is very normal for us to lose about 50-150 pieces hair a day (and this number depends on the color and thickness of your hair).

Hair loss is caused by many reasons, such as stress, anxiety, pregnancy, and the body lacking certain vitamins.

My hair loss problem started after my pregnancies, the hormone change caused my hair to fall in large amounts. And then of course the stress from school and daily life activities didn't help with that. I spend hundreds of dollars on products that were supposed to help with hair loss, from shampoos to hair treatments and the like. People would recommend hair masks, and olive oil treatments that I was supposed to leave in my hair for hours, but I didn't have the time for that. Nothing worked.

Finally I decided to look more into it, and actually my younger sister encouraged me and she knew a lot about taking care of your hair. So taking her tips, and tips that I found while doing my research, I discovered  some tips and ideas that has really helped me with my hair loss (and it did not stop it because it is normal for us to shed some hair) but it has helped my hair look healthier, I see less hair in my brush (a lot less then before) and when you have hair loss, you wake up in the morning and your pillow is full of hair, I barley see hair on my pillow now, and best of all my hair is getting thicker now with time.

So  now you would like to know what is it that I have been doing? well here you go...((and remember this is something that needs time, it won't happen over night. I have been doing this since June of 2012).

First thing I started using natural shampoos. The one I use is Pure Renewal by Aveeno. It is a sulfate-free shampoo that is full of natural ingredients. I really like this shampoo because it is really good, and it is less pricey than all the other shampoos I have used. I also use the Organix Moroccan Argan oil shampoo one or twice a week.

Second I wash my hair with cold water. Yes cold water. I know it's hard for a lot of you, but over time you will get used it. Find a way where you can only rinse your hair with cold water. Washing your hair with cold water closes the hair follicles and this helps the hair from falling.

Ok so as a hijabi, how many of you have washed your hair and your in a hurry so without drying the hair you just put on the headband and scarf and l eave. Bad bad bad. I used to be guilty of this behavior. But I have stopped because, wearing the scarf while the hair is wet and for long periods of time causes bacteria in the scalp and that bacteria will cause the follicles to become loose and this will make your hair fall easily. So make sure to always have dry hair when you put on the scarf.

I highly recommend using Biotin. Seriously it does magic to your hair. If you don't like taking vitamins, then Spring Valley Vitamins has Biotin in chew able tablets in cherry flavor and it tastes just like candy. I take this EVERY SINGLE DAY. It helps a lot.

Another thing that we tend to forget to do is protecting our hair when we use heat on it. Whether you are blow drying, curling, or straightening your hair always use heat protection like Tresemme thermal creations. Because heat is so damaging to our hair. If I am blow drying my hair, I spray the Tresemme thermal creation on my hair before I start blow drying. After I am done with drying my hair, I use Moroccan Argan oil on the end of my hair to help prevent split ends, and it is a light oil that you can use for your hair to help even with the frizz. And it smells really good.

Another really important tip that I just love is messaging your scalp. Using eucalyptus oil or anything with pepper mint in it and message your scalp for 3 minutes before showering helps increase blood flow to your follicles. I also do this every night, I put my hair down from and take the hair brush and message my scalp softly with the brush for few minutes. It feels really good, and this also helps circulate blood flow to the hair follicles and make them stronger.

Trim your hair every six months, or whenever you see split ends.

And lastly, eating a lot of fruits and vegetable such as broccoli, asparagus, honeydew and mango. They all contain nutrients that are essential to healthy hair.

I personally do all of these steps. I have been doing them for eight months now, and I have seen a great improvement in my hair. Taking care of our hair naturally is really best option. Adding chemicals to your hair does more damage to your hair than help it.

I really hope these tips would help you as well. And remember it takes time :))

  1. Great tips! My grandmother told me the same things. She told me not to use too much hair products as well. And that towel-drying my hair is better than blow-drying it. By doing so, I would prevent hair breakage and loss. =)
